Dye Sublimation Printing is a growth area, with the printed fabrics being used in; retail advertising displays, exhibitions, upholstery, wallpapers, and specialist print requirements throughout England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
EFI™ to meet this have introduced the next generation of visual display dye sublimation fabric printers. The EFI™ VUTEk® FabriVU 180 and 340 soft signage printers, available in 1.8 metre and 3.4 metre widths. There is also an advanced version of the 340, the 340i.
Dye sublimation printing is the process of applying sublimation inks onto a surface, which is usually a polyester, polymer, or polymer coated item, using a heat press to provide a combination of heat, and pressure.
This process causes the inks (dye sublimation inks are a formulation of coloured dyes suspended in solution that will pass through the print-head of a digital printer) to be converted to a gaseous state that penetrates the fabric surface so that a permanent, full colour image is created. As the colour penetrates the surface of the item, the resulting product is colourful, long lasting and resistant to scratching unlike some other printing methods that merely print onto the surface of the item, such as standard printing onto PVC and rigid media.
One question often asked is why polyester, polymer, or polymer coated items are used in sublimation printing and not cotton materials? It is possible to print dye sublimation on to a cotton fabric, but the image will wash out within a few washes. It should also be remembered that although items might have a polyester or polymer coating, they may be unsuitable as they are unable to withstand the temperatures needed for dye sublimation printing.
